Ignore The Other Reviews - Read This for MacBook Okay, first of all. I hate reviews that only give you half the story. Read this review if you want the scoop on this drive: Beware, you have to be a little bit computer savvy if you want to use this drive.
It is not plug and play - if you expect to plug it into your MacBook and simply follow the bouncing ball, then you will be disappointed/frustrated. Also, it doesn't come with a set of detailed instructions telling you how to back up your apple computer files. It only comes formatted for anything other than apple. So, what you have to do is google the following: 1. How to format seagate harddrive to macbook; then, 2. How to backup macbook files to seagate drive. Then, follow the bouncing ball when you find answers to these searches.
You will know if you are successfully backing up your files if it takes about 17 - 20 minutes. Lastly, when you are done backing up the files, you have to properly eject the seagate drive, otherwise you will get an error message (if you just pull the wire out of your macbook).
The procedure is a little involved, but. Hey, you are getting a 2TB drive for 80 bucks. Edit to my earlier review I wrote a very harsh and upset review about this hard drive yesterday as I was experiencing issues with it and dealing with a lot of frustration. However, once I realized that what I needed to do to get this hard drive to work for my MacBook wasn't actually clearly outlined in the instructions, it was seamless from there. For those who, like me, are not technologically inclined and want to use this hard drive for your Mac ONLY (not both Mac and PC), all you need to do is go to Disk Utility and reformat the drive for Mac (i.e. You hit 'Erase'). It took mere seconds for mine to complete this process, and once complete, I was prompted by Time Machine to back up my Mac – which is the sole reason I'd purchased this drive.
I woke up this morning to see that my computer has been fully backed up on the external hard drive via Time Machine, so my negative 5 review is now a full, +5 stars. The reason I've deducted one star is because I think the instructions should have included a small note for users who want to use this drive for Mac only. I understand that this is a PC/Mac hard drive that is supposed to be used seamlessly between the two (and there Seagate sells a separate 'for Mac' drive), but when I followed the instructions to download Paragon NTFS for Mac – thinking I would need to do this for the drive to work on my Mac – it ended up being a nightmare for me and I wasted two hours trying to get my Mac to even read the hard drive.
So, for those who do want to use this for both your PC and your Mac, good luck to you because I wasn't able to figure it out (and fortunately won't need to), and Best Buy will NOT let you return the hard drive if opened and you'll have to contact Seagate directly. DO NOT BUY IF YOU OWN A MAC I just wasted 2 hours of my life trying to get this garbage piece of technology to even be read by my MacBook—nothing.
I wanted to use it for Time Machine, but I got an error message. Downloaded NTFS for Mac per the instructions, and I couldn't even install the application until I restarted my computer.
But that didn't help either. If this was the place to use swear words, you bet I would.
I wish I could give this hard drive NEGATIVE stars – in large part because Seagate, Partition AND Best Buy do not have helpful customer service available or any sort of troubleshooting tips. @Best Buy – considering I purchased this today and it has done the opposite of what it's supposed to do, I expect a full refund. Piece of crap First time buying online from best buy, got it on cyber monday. This thing was working fine, stored mp4 files on it to watch on my ps4. Until a week later, i was using it, the shows werent playing, so i reset my ps4, and then this crap starts making a beeping noise, is no longer a recognized device on my ps4, tried to plug it to my laptop and then the light on the harddrive stopped blinking, not recognized on my laptop, and then eventually stopped revving up whenever plugged in. Waste of money, dont ever buy this crap or anything online from best buy.
Don't buy it I bought this external drive yesterday, my laptop didn't recognize it. I tried another cable and the laptop didn't see the drive.
I wasted 2 hours of my time and went and replaced with new one' Best buy doesn't accept return for drives, only replacement', same issue, the laptop gave a message that can't recognize the device and it might be damaged. Windows 8, and both USB 2 & 3 don't recognize it. I contacted the company and waiting for their answer. My other brand external hard drives work perfectly with no need to even install any software, just connect the drive. Very disappointed.
Not Such a Good Purchase After All Well, I would like to give a better review, but the truth is that I haven't been able to get it to run on my Windows 10 PC as of yet. I plug it into the PC's USB port, and it starts beeping; it doesn't stop beeping until I disconnect. Although I can find the drive listed under Printers and Devices, it doesn't show up as a drive with a letter on the hard drive. I have been forced to seek help from the IT guy at my place of employment (he's looking into it) because I can't find any support options at all for installing this unit from Seagate.
That lack of support is critical in times like this, and it just isn't there. Too bad, as it looked like an awesome little unit.:-(. Great price/performance sleek USB 3.0 drive It is the best performance external backup conventional hard drive I have used so far. I have tested the R/W performance of this drive using CrystalDiskMark and it comes very close to the 130MB/sec both R/W, which is quite impressive.
It is also very quiet drive and hardly noticeable when it is connected. I also like the design of the case (aluminum top cover and separate USB adapter). I didn't open the drive to check the content though just to keep the warranty in tact. All-in-all I think it is a great value so I bought a second one within a couple of days while the sale was still going on.
